If you are new to ArchiCAD, it is recommended that you follow the video while practicing each step in the software.
What You Will Learn in This ArchiCAD 26 Tutorial
This tutorial covers the following essential ArchiCAD 26 floor plan techniques:
Opening ArchiCAD 26
Creating a new ArchiCAD project
Saving an ArchiCAD project
Setting working units and dimension units
Creating grid lines
Drawing external walls
Drawing internal walls
Setting up a basic floor plan
Let’s look at each step in more detail.
1. Introduction to the ArchiCAD 26 Tutorial
Timestamp: 0:00
The tutorial begins with an introduction to the process of creating a floor plan in ArchiCAD 26.
A good understanding of the ArchiCAD interface and basic drawing workflow will make it easier to create accurate architectural drawings.
2. Opening ArchiCAD 26 Software
Timestamp: 0:40
The first practical step is opening ArchiCAD 26.
After launching the software, you can access the ArchiCAD workspace and prepare the program for creating your new architectural project.
If you are using ArchiCAD for the first time, take some time to familiarize yourself with the different toolbars, menus, navigation controls, and drawing tools.
3. Creating a New Project in ArchiCAD 26
Timestamp: 2:40
Before drawing your floor plan, you need to create a new project.
A new ArchiCAD project provides the working environment where you can develop your architectural drawings and building model.
When starting a project, it is important to establish the correct project settings before beginning detailed drafting.
You can follow this section of the tutorial to see how to create a new project in ArchiCAD 26.
4. Saving an ArchiCAD 26 Project
Timestamp: 3:20
Saving your project regularly is an important part of working in ArchiCAD.
Once you have created your new project, save the file in an appropriate location using a clear project name. Regularly saving your work can help prevent the loss of important drawings and project information.
It is also good practice to maintain organized project files, especially when working on larger architectural or construction projects.
5. Setting Working Units and Dimension Units
Timestamp: 4:30
Before drawing walls and other building elements, you should configure the appropriate measurement settings.
This section covers:
Working units
Dimension units
Basic measurement settings
Correct units are important when creating an accurate architectural floor plan. For example, if your project uses millimetres, metres, or another measurement system, the project settings should reflect the units required for your drawings.
Setting the units correctly at the beginning can help reduce errors later in the design process.
6. How to Draw Grid Lines in ArchiCAD 26
Timestamp: 8:00
Grid lines can help you organize your floor plan and establish reference points for structural and architectural elements.
In this tutorial, you will learn how to create grid lines in ArchiCAD 26 and use them as references when developing your floor plan.
Grid lines can be particularly useful when working on projects involving structural columns, walls, and other building components.
A well-organized grid system can also make it easier to maintain consistency throughout the design.
7. How to Draw External Walls in ArchiCAD 26
Timestamp: 17:50
After establishing your grid lines, the next step is drawing the external walls of the building.
External walls define the overall shape and boundaries of your floor plan. Using the Wall Tool in ArchiCAD, you can create walls with specific dimensions and properties.
When drawing external walls, pay attention to:
Wall thickness
Wall alignment
Building dimensions
Connections between walls
Overall floor plan geometry
Accurate external walls provide the foundation for adding other architectural elements to your floor plan.
8. How to Draw Internal Walls in ArchiCAD 26
Timestamp: 25:00
Once the external walls have been created, you can begin adding internal walls.
Internal walls are used to divide the building into different spaces such as:
Bedrooms
Living rooms
Kitchens
Bathrooms
Hallways
Offices
Storage areas
When drawing internal walls, ensure that they connect correctly with the external walls and that the dimensions and room layouts match the design requirements.
This step is essential for developing a functional and well-organized floor plan.
Why Learn ArchiCAD 26 for Floor Plan Design?
Learning how to create floor plans in ArchiCAD can be valuable for anyone involved in architectural design, drafting, or construction.
ArchiCAD allows users to create building information models while working with architectural elements such as walls, doors, windows, slabs, roofs, furniture, and other components.
For beginners, learning the basic floor plan workflow provides a strong foundation for more advanced ArchiCAD modeling and documentation.
Tips for Creating Better Floor Plans in ArchiCAD 26
When creating a floor plan, keep the following tips in mind:
1. Set Your Units Before Drawing
Make sure your working and dimension units are correct before you begin drawing. This helps maintain accuracy throughout the project.
2. Use Grid Lines as References
Grid lines can make it easier to align walls and other building elements consistently.
3. Use Accurate Wall Dimensions
Avoid estimating wall thicknesses and room dimensions. Use the required project dimensions to create an accurate floor plan.
4. Save Your Work Regularly
Save your ArchiCAD project frequently and consider maintaining backup copies of important files.
5. Build Your Skills Gradually
Once you understand basic walls and grid lines, move on to other ArchiCAD tools such as doors, windows, slabs, roofs, stairs, furniture, and dimensions.
